Chanel

Chanel is a female hybrid-breed capuchin rescued from the pet trade. Her owner kept her and another monkey in a caravan and Chanel has a number of re-occurant streio-typical behaviours due to her time as a pet. Chanel (also called 'Nelly' by staff at the Sanctuary) is highly intelligent, but her behaviour can be unpredictable and is often aggressive. She is happiest in the company of Peppy, her long-term mate and the dominant male of her group. She also spends time with Mr Monkey, a younger male who often irritates her with his behaviour, but also is her playmate in boisterous games! Chanel may have the behavioural problems that developed during her time as a pet, for the rest of her life. Sterio-typical behaviour is often deeply ingrained and will re-surface when an animal is bored, depressed or anxious. Keeper and volunteers work hard at the Monkey Sanctuary to create and design envrionmental enrichment for the monkeys in the Sanctuary's care, so that their days are stimulating and interesting. Social company is also vital for monkeys, but the integration of a new monkey into a social group can be a long and difficult process as rescued monkeys often come to the Monkey Sanctuary having never met, or seen, another monkey.
