Chico
Chico is a young adult Barbary macaque. Rescued by the Sanctuary in 2008 when the sanctuary he was living in previously was forced to close in the nationwide 'credit crunch'.
Chico had been rescued in Paris, France after having been kept as a pet. He was integrated into a small group of other rescued Barbary macaques who he still lives with at the Monkey Sanctuary.
Chico enjoys the space of a new enclosure
Chico is a friendly and intelligent macaque who, like the others in his groups enjoys toys, especially balls and 'kongs' and boisterous and noisy games!
Barbary macaques are one of the most wide-spread primates in the world, their ranges extend from Africa into Gibralter and they are widely traded as pets. The trade in macaques as pets and 'guard' animals is highly damaging as Barbary macaques are endangered in the wild. The pet trade is also damaging to individual macaques however as being large, sociable and intelligent they suffer a great deal of understimulation and psycological disorders in the pet trade and captivity.
Adopting Chico means that you are givingstaff at The Monkey Sanctuary the resources they need to give Chico the best life possible, whilst also campaigning to end the trade in primates as pets in the UK and worldwide.
