DonkeyDonkey is a young adult male Barbary macaque rescued by the Sanctuary in 2008 when the sanctuary he was living in previously was forced to close.
Donkey was originally rescued Paris, France from a travelling circus. Upon his rescue he was found to have suffered fractures to the head and broken bones in his leg.

Donkey does not trust humans easily and seems to have a particular distrust of children, although we don't know why exactly, it would seem logical to ascribe this to his time in the travelling circus. Donkey is however friendly and receptive to individual humans once he has spent some time around them and Keepers at the Sanctuary are slowly gaining his trust.
Barbary macaques are one of the most wide-spread primates in the world, their ranges extend from Africa into Gibralter and they are widely traded as pets. The trade in macaques as pets and 'guard' animals is highly damaging as Barbary macaques are endangered in the wild. The pet trade is also damaging to individual macaques however, as being both large and sociable, intelligent primates they suffer a great deal of understimulation and psycological disorders in the pet trade and captivity.
Adopting Donkey means that you are giving staff at The Monkey Sanctuary the resources they need to give Donkey the best life possible, whilst also campaigning to end the trade in primates as pets in the UK and worldwide.
