Ivor
Ivor is a adult male woolly monkey. He was born at the Monkey Sanctuary and lives as part of an established social group. Ivor is often easy to see as he likes to demonstrate his strength by shaking the enclosure wire at visitors.
When Ivor was a young baby, his mother died and his sister took on the responsibility of caring for him and raising him. She adopted him, breast-fed him and cared for him as one of her own babies. In childhood Ivor was friendly to humans and enjoyed social contact. When he was still young however, Ivor took a bad fall and broke his leg. He was taken to the vets and had the leg set in plaster. When Ivor rejoined the colony he was rejected by the others because of the strange contraption on his leg. Although Ivor made a full recovery, he never totally trusted humans again and often displays dominant behaviour around them; this is one reason he likes to shake the enclosure wires at visitors; to show them that he is strong, active and in charge.

Ivor is often in the company of the female woolly monkey Maya or his friend Max. He is friendly and polite once he is used to an individual human, but will still not allow humans to think they are in charge at the Sanctuary! He has many ways to make sure of this, as our primate welfare team are well aware!
Ivor suffered a great loss in September of 2009 when his older brother, Xingu died. Xingu was a popular and friendly woolly monkey in the colony, and his death means that Ivor is without family in the colony. Ivor is now spending most of his time with his friends Maya and Max and appears to be coping well with the loss of his older brother.
